WEST NEW YORK, N.J. – A West New York man was sentenced Thursday to 18 months in prison for his role in a conspiracy to commit mail fraud and tax evasion, which involved the embezzlement of $1.2 million from his employer by creating fake temporary employees and pocketing their paychecks, Acting U.S. Attorney Ralph J. Marra, Jr. announced.

NEWARK, N.J. – The mayors of Hoboken, Secaucus, and Ridgefield, the Jersey City deputy mayor and council president, two state assemblymen, numerous other public officials and political figures, and five rabbis from New Jersey and New York were among 44 individuals charged today in a federal investigation of public corruption and a high-volume, international money laundering conspiracy.

Among those arrested in the public corruption portion of the investigation are the Mayor of Hoboken, Peter Cammarano III, the Mayor of Secaucus, Dennis Elwell, N.J. Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt, the Deputy Mayor of Jersey City, Leona Beldini.

SECAUCUS, N.J. - A man attempting to break into a car Monday night in the Plaza at Harmon Meadow fled after the owner arrived, authorities said.
The car, parked near a Red Lobster restaurant, reportedly flashed a gun to the owner before taking off. |
