All the testiness that had been building between the Detroit Tigers and NY finally boiled over.
Before Thursday's brawl, the Yankees were leading the wild-card race and were only 4 ½ games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place.
They all got fines as well.
Not suspended, but hit with undisclosed fines were Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson, Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, Yankees righthander Tommy Kahnle and Tigers shortstop José Iglesias.
After one of the on-field scuffles, Verlander and Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez got into a heated argument in the dugout.
"I was actually on the field, so I haven't seen it and haven't talked to them about it", Ausmus said. But an appeal won't result in a longer sentence for anyone, and it's unlikely Cabrera faces fewer games.
The discipline was handed down Friday by MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre.
Girardi contended an early warning would've cut off the trouble before it escalated. It's worth remembering Bryce Harper received four games for charging the mound and even throwing his helmet, albeit wildly, at Hunter Strickland after being hit by a pitch on May 30th. Betances seemed to be indicating he had thrown a breaking ball instead of a fastball, and wound up shouting at the Tigers and the umps. That won't sit well with him - after the game, he said he shouldn't have been ejected because he was acting in self-defense.
In fact, you could make a case that Cabrera deserved more for what seemed to be a premeditated act, baiting Romine into a confrontation. Many shared the video of Sanchez's sucker punches, drawing the ire of plenty of fans. While a night out on the town might have been a nice team bonding activity, Girardi says the fight against Detroit could help.
This time, Michael Fulmer hit Sanchez with a pitch in the fifth, an inning after Sanchez had homered for the fourth time in this three-game series.
"Things got out of control pretty quickly there", Sanchez said. "It can be affected but on the other side it's a team that's together", Girardi said.
"The guy (Kahnle) who threw at me? I was cool with that", Cabrera said.
The game was finally about to resume when Cabrera stepped toward Romine, and the NY catcher took off his mask.
Austin Romine is the brother of Tigers utility man Andrew Romine. "And then he pushed me". I went out there to defend my teammate, my team. Sanchez later appeared to take a swing at someone at the bottom of the pile.
Delin Betances hit Tigers catcher James McCann in the head with a 98 miles per hour fastball in the seventh inning, which led to the benches clearing and some verbal attacks but no physical confrontations. Betances said he didn't hit McCann on objective, and McCann seemed to agree afterward. Later, Sanchez delivered another punch to Nick Castellanos, who was already immobilized. I think that's important as well.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was given a one-game suspension after Wilson threw at Frazier despite warnings being sent to both benches by the home-plate umpire. Both benches cleared and the bullpens emptied.
"In this case, honesty was not the best policy", Wilson said. I don't care. I take my responsibility. They did lose the series, however, as the Yankees took the first two games of the series easily, winning 13-4 Tuesday and 10-2 Wednesday. Ausmus can still manage until Wilson's situation is decided. "It was a good win and we needed the win".
