And now Australian star Cate Blanchett has been tipped to play Lucille in an authorised biopic about the American actress. They married and had two children together, but divorced in 1960 after 20 years together due to Arnaz's drinking problems and other issues.
Blanchett is yet to sign on the dotted line, but the United States trade publication The Hollywood Reporter says the 48-year-old Melbourne-born actress is close.
Blanchett's next film, 'Thor: "Ragnarok" sees the two-time Academy Award victor in a very new role, as Hela the goddess of death.
There have been previous attempts to bring this Hollywood love story to the screen, including 1991's Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter, with Francis Fisher and Maurice Bernard in the title roles. Lucie Arnaz, 66, and her 64-year-old brother Desi Arnaz, Jr. are set to produce the film, along with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch from the Escape Artists production company. The script was written by West Wing creator Aaaron Sorkin, who's also written acclaimed films like The Social Network and Moneyball. The Australian actress might not be known for her comedic roles, but as Ball said herself: "I'm not amusing".
Cate is the only big name now attached to star in the new movie, but producers are on the hunt for an actor to portray Desi, and sources tell Deadline.com Javier Bardem could be in the running for the role.
