DOOM nets big 6.66 update, goes free to play for the weekend

There will be no more random unlock system for this new update because it has been revised and improved for the multiplayer.

To accommodate this change, everyone's level will be reset to zero, but players won't lose any of the goods they've unlocked - not unless they want to anyway. Perhaps the ensuing year has been kind to it-indeed, Update 6.66 sets about overhauling the entire UI and revamping player progression.

As the game only received DLC for its multiplayer portion, this update adds every map, gun, playable demon, and equipment, along with all customization options that were previously only available via the DLC, onto the base game free of charge. On top of that, the update will change how players unlock additional guns, demons, equipment and all of the player and weapon customization options with a new multiplayer progression system.

"Now, if there's a specific helmet you want, you can work toward unlocking it by focusing your play style on the related challenge", Marty Stratton, Doom's director, said in a blog post. Runes will act as perks, activating persistent abilities that can be customized in your loadout. Starting tomorrow, July 20, and running through July 24, you can jump into the game for free with a Gold subscription. Specifically, the kill card has been revised to provide more accurate information on their demise, including who killed them, as well as that player's weapon type and damage that combined to kill them. "Starting at 12:00 pm ET on Thursday, July 20, on Xbox One, 1pm ET on Thursday, July 20 on PC, and 12:00 pm ET on Thursday, July 27 on PlayStation 4, you can try DOOM for free".

Doom was probably 2016's greatest surprise. As all progress from the free event is transferred to the full game for anyone that decides to purchase it, this may be an excellent opportunity to see if the game does live up to all the praise it received previous year. Once Doom is available to play for free on Xbox Live, you'll have unlimited access to Doom's multiplayer and SnapMap modes too. Should you purchase Doom during the Free Weekend, all of your progress will carry over.

During the Free Weekend, which ends on July 30 at 9pm PT, digital copies of Doom will be discounted to $14.99 USD/£11.99.
