The incident occurred north of MacArthur Boulevard, in an area near John Wayne Airport, authorities said. The cause of the crash is unknown.

Two people escaped the fiery wreckage of a small plane that crashed Friday morning on the 405 Freeway in Orange County, clipped a pickup and skidded to a stop against a median as it burst into flames.

A small aircraft has crashed onto the 405 Freeway in Irvine, CA, according to multiple local reports.

"Spun around, had a passenger in there, saw flames all around us, thought at first it was just a big rig that hit us", the driver told ABC 7. The driver in that clipped auto told ABC7 that the plane hit the rear end of his truck, which then went out of control. Both patients "had vitals" when they were removed from the plane, he said. Flights are still being allowed to depart. He checked to make sure his passenger was safe before pulling over on the side of the freeway. The airport, which is located in Santa Ana, posted on Twitter that the plane landed short of the runway.

In the aftermath of the crash, the airfield was closed to arrivals, but arrivals were resumed about 45 minutes afterward.

Kurtz says fire officials will be shutting down the freeway in both directions.
