Polls are open 6 a.m.to 7 p.m. Swing state Virginia's off-year gubernatorial contests are often used to forecast the outcomes of midterm congressional elections.

If one forgets an acceptable photo I.D., a provisional ballot may be given.

All absentee ballots must be returned to the Halifax County Voter Registration and Elections Office by 7 p.m. on Election Day to be counted. Most recent polls have shown a close race, with Perriello doing well in and near the Charlottesville-Southside congressional district he represented in the U.S. House for one term (2009-2010), and Northam doing well in the Tidewater area he represented in the Virginia legislature.

Here is a brief summary of each candidate's qualifications.

Northam is a more traditional candidate who stresses his pragmatic approach and ability to work with Republicans. He said his priorities are affordable health care and education, and he has introduced a plan to make community colleges and workforce training free for what he calls "new-collar" jobs in high-demand fields like health care, cybersecurity and skilled construction trades. Three Republicans are seeking their party's nomination.

"When Tom Perriello entered the race a few months ago, nobody expected a competitive race", Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Commitee and a senior adviser to Perriello, wrote to Mic in a statement.

The IBEW said that they made a decision to endorse Perriello after he became the only candidate in the race the race to call for free two-year community college and repealing the state's "right-to-work" law, which allows workers to benefit from union contracts without paying dues to those unions.

The Democratic primary, one of just two gubernatorial races this year, was quickly examined in national press coverage as an early indicator for the party's political climate and future ideological leanings after an unexpected defeat last fall and the long and fraught primary between Hillary Clinton and Sen.

Gillespie is a moderate GOP insider who advised former President George W. Bush and has a more than $2 million cash advantage over his challengers. Northam, who brands himself as a pragmatist, is backed by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, a longtime supporter and friend of the Clintons, and by both of Virginia's Senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner.

On the Republican side, former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie is the heavy favorite in a three-way contest, but he's faced a fight from the far-right in staunch Trump ally Corey Stewart.

"Virginia will be more hotly contested than ever", said Stephen Farnsworth, a political analyst at the University of Mary Washington. An worldwide trade attorney, he has vowed to protect Confederate monuments such as statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Frank Wagner, has struggled to gain traction, despite winning the endorsement of The Washington Post's editorial board. For lieutenant governor, Republican candidates are Glenn Davis, Bryce Reeves and Jill Vogel; Democratic candidates are Justin Fairfax, Susan Platt and Gene Rossi.

Voters across the Commonwealth will get their say Tuesday on who will be on the ballot for offices including governor and lieutenant governor.

The victor of Tuesday's primary is likely to challenge Republican Ed Gillespie in November.

Any voting questions may be directed to Registrar Harding at 476-3322.
