Massive 'sea monster' carcass washes ashore in Indonesia

A almost 50-foot sea creature that washed up on the shore of a remote beach in Indonesia has led many to wonder: what is it?

On Serum Island, part of Indonesia's Maluku province, a 37-year-old man was walking down the beach at night, when he saw a odd shape in the water.

Asrul Tuanakota, 37, was the first person to spot the unknown creature but initially believed it was a stranded boat.

As per Mashable, a local military command is keeping watch on the carcass, while residents have asked authorities to help remove the remains so it doesn't contaminate the surrounding area. The massive 50-foot-long creature, long since deceased, is already decaying, and nobody can seem to offer a definitive answer as to exactly what it is... or was.

The animal is just the latest huge creature to have baffled onlookers by washing ashore in recent months.

Some have speculated that the creature was a giant squid, while others even guessed it was an elephant.

Since it appeared in Maluku earlier this week, people have suggested it could be a giant squid, whale or octopus.

"This is a humpback whale", said YouTube user Patasiwa Kumbang Amalatu. Experts believe it died days ago; it's in such an advanced state of decomposition that it's hard to tell what it is.

A group of marine scientists have reportedly taken samples of the creature in a bid to identify it.
