PCG President Johnie Reed, a cotton producer from Kress, TX, said, "We congratulate Secretary Perdue, and we know that he will hit the ground running, as he has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture and the cotton industry in particular".

Uniquely qualified as a former farmer, agribusinessman, veterinarian, state legislator, and governor of Georgia, he became the 31st United States Secretary of Agriculture on April 25, 2017.

"I've known and worked with Sonny Perdue for many years and I know what a dedicated public servant he is", United Fresh Board member Bill Brim of Lewis Taylor Farms of Tipton, GA, said in the statement. "He is the first Secretary of Agriculture from Georgia, and I know he will make us proud".

The complaints generally stem from Perdue's involvement with family business ventures during his time as governor, as the New York Times reported.

He also visited Cuba, China and South America as part of several trade missions aimed at growing exports for Peach State farmers.

As ag chief, Perdue will oversee the nation's nutrition, farm and forestry programs and will play a major role in shaping the upcoming US farm bill and in U.S.ag trade negotiations. Perdue's main task over the coming year will be working with Congress and coordinating his department's input on the next five-year farm bill.

Democrats surely think so. Rep. Smith goes on to say that during his Farm Bill listening sessions last week, Third District producers made it clear they wanted to see Secretary Perdue confirmed as soon as possible. USA farmers rely on existing export markets for much of their livelihood, and they deserve access to new markets wherever it makes sense.

All this comes as Trump tries to crack down on illegal immigration to the USA, an issue that could leave many farms short-staffed due to their reliance on foreign - and sometimes, undocumented - workers. Perdue's first cousin, although he did preside over the Senate floor during the vote.

At his hearing, he pledged to help senators sustain popular crop insurance programmes and fix problems with government dairy programmes.

"Food is a noble thing to trade", Mr Perdue said.

Perdue will also be part of the administration's response to a dispute with Canada's dairy industry, which has a new lower-priced classification of milk product that Trump says is harming USA producers in dairy states like Wisconsin and NY. His knowledge, background and experience will serve him well leading an agency with the scope and size of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"I'm pleased that the U.S. Senate was able to work in a bipartisan fashion to confirm Governor Perdue".
